Official signs & appellations

Quality guaranties of many of our products and what they mean:

The protected geographical indications (PGI) identify an agricultural product, raw or processed, which quality, reputation or other characteristics are linked to its geographical origin.

The PGI applies to agricultural, agro-food and wine sectors.

PGI is related to skill. It is not self-created; rather, it confers protection on an existing production, thereby giving protection not only at national, but also at international level.

PROTECTED GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS

The PGI can be based on the reputation of the product, which means, the sense of a strong recognition by the public at any given time, and which must be associated with a skill or a specific quality attributable to the geographical origin.

The rules for preparing a PGI are listed in the specifications and are subject to control procedures implemented by an independent body approved by the INAO.

IGP (PGI)

L’Appellation d’origine protégée (PDO) stands for a product for which the principal steps for production are done following a well-established technique within the same geographical area, which gives the product its characteristics.

It is a European symbol that protects the name of the product all over the European Union.

The Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) refers to products meeting the criteria of the PDO and protects the denomination on the French territory. It constitutes a step towards the PDO, now Europe-wide sign. It can also relate to products not covered by European regulations (e.g. forest products case).

L’APPELLATION D’ORIGINE PROTÉGÉE

It is the notion of soil (terroir) that is the basis of the concept of Appellations d’origine - AO.

A terroir is a specific geographical area where production takes its originality directly from the specific nature of its production area. Terroir is based on a system of interactions between physical and biological environment, and a set of human factors within a space which a human community built during its history with a collective productive knowledge. There are elements of originality and typicality of the product.

The rules for preparing an PDO are listed in the specifications and are subject to control procedures implemented by an independent body approved by the INAO.

The Label Rouge is a national sign, which refers to products which by their terms of production or manufacture have a higher level of quality compared to other similar products usually marketed.

Quality, in this case, refers to all the properties and characteristics of a product that give it its ability to satisfy explicit or implicit needs.

In addition to the sensory characteristics and their perception, of the Label Rouge product by the consumer, the superior quality is based on:

  • production conditions, which differ from the conditions of production of usually marketed similar products,

  • product image in terms of its conditions of production,

  • elements of the presentation or service

The monitoring of compliance with these requirements and product traceability is ensured by an independent certification body on the basis of a monitoring plan approved by the INAO.

Monitoring of maintenance over time of the high eating quality is ensured by performing regular sensory analysis and organoleptic tests that compare the Label Rouge product with the current product.
